LA Fashion Week 2021

August of 2021, I get a phone call from a friend asking if I wanted to show Normal Culture in a fashion show or LAFW. It all came as a surprise to me, because I had no intentions o doing a fashion show in the near future. I questioned myself and my brand. I started asking myself questions like, “Am I prepared?” “Will people like my designs?”.

I grew up modeling, so I was well versed with the modeling aspect off participating in a fashion show, but didn’t really know what the role o the designer really entailed. I didn’t let it stress me too much though, I knew I could do it. I knew as long as I properly planned, everything would be fine.

I love making white clothes, but at the time I had just released a series of dresses that were colored and cheetah printed. Even though this was my first fashion show as a designer, I wanted to be able to show people what Normal Culture was capable of. We showcased 22 looks. We opened the show with swimwear and transitioned into ready to wear dresses to close the show. All while having some of the best afrobeats playing to set the tone of the show.

This fashion show was a full circle moment for me. I never knew I would grow up to be a fashion designer. I always thought that I would be a super model. The production company that I showcased with was the same company that I walked for during NYFW in 2019 prior to the pandemic. So, to be recognized as a designer and too be able to show my creativity and growth on the same platform will always have a special place in my heart.
